what about people just getting into the hobby? I liked and purchased watches in 2017, but i only ever really learned about watches this year!

OK guys. So I am a Sub guy. On my 5th or so Rolex in 30 years. Mostly Subs, DS44, Batman. If I was expressing a little interest in Seiko's new release 62 MAS, should I pick it up? Even give to my public school teacher brother who I have wanting to look a little more tweaked. I am not likely to offer him my Tudor BB58 ETA Smiley or the ETA Pelagos. I might be interested in Omega planet Ocean divers for myself or wife. Any $ spent just feels like a wasteful intrusion into my next Rolex diver or GMT. 😨❤⌚⌚⌚⌚⌚

They are approaching or are pretty much overpriced at this point. Buy an omega if you like it. Price retention sucks 😂 I know, i bought one at retail. if you get it pre-loved, it may not be as disappointing. If price retention is a priority, get the watch the fan boys hate. No getting around that.

I'm happy to see Hodinkee going back to what made it special, the current direction felt really artificial and trying to appease more the watch companies than the community around it.

John, I've been a subscriber of your channel since your very first video, more than 5 yrs ago. I've also been a commenter on your videos mostly in the early days. Videos so early that I think you may have even removed them as you were still figuring out your format and niche. This video kinda kills it for me, man. I'm going to be completely honest with you; I was really close to hitting that unsubscribe button after watching this video but decided to message you instead. Can't speak for everyone, but I don't care at all about hodinkee. fkin zero interest. Hodinkee means nothing to me. I suspect many subscribers feel the same way. This isn't a business to a lot of us, it's a hobby. The hobby of collecting. I'm a subscriber because I care about your POV on actual watches, not the watch community or market. I can read that for myself. Anywho, just thought I'd leave my point of view, not meant to be negative. Just my thought.

Hodinkee comment section has some enthusiasts always complaining about honesty and so on with product placement, pricing, the establishment's opinion on releases and how they were biased and so on. Therefore, right now, Hodinkee will have to regain honesty with the simple crowd and I can see that with the new team they have put together, I am not kissing butt but you mentioned Tony is a friend of yours? I feel so much honesty from that guy, it has not gone unnoticed, he really cares about the art.

The whole world was changed by Covid. I wish Hodinkee the best going forward. They just have to find their identity. I think that it is perhaps time to shift a bit from some of the collectors who can afford anything that we can't really relate to. There are a lot more of us that struggle to build a small collection than there are people who can and do own any and everything. I am happy for them but they are a very elite and small group...I can't identify. Best of wishes to Ben. Thank you John P.

@JohnPWatches We obviously have a newer generation for watch collecting and from what I have gathered being 42, this generation are very ethical when it comes to pricing, eco friendliness, wearability of watches and not safe queens, so practicality as well as being conservative by nature if you take into account their interest in environmental sustainability. I think pricing came to a point that it became vulgar, watches like new man daytonas going at ridiculous prices, grey market Rolex's, even vintage rolex were sky high and still are. Therefore, is this generation price sensitive due to their conservative nature as well as the inflationary environment we are in today making living and saving harder? This is all anecdotal and further conversation from you will be great but I will say that I am glad, the market is becoming more sensible, i mean it will seem sensible relative to where we were. Shame there isn't much evidence we can go by. Can I also add that for the most part, the talking watches episodes really trained my eyes for classic designs and made me open minded, however, they are quite far from the everyday reality of a watch enthusiast. I noticed that on the more recent Hodinkee podcast, they were talking more about value and conservative pricing, did they get ahead of themselves being too up market?

Hodinkee sold out of their Porsche Design x Hodinkee watch for over 9000 each and suddenly after sold out "no more selling watches!". Interesting.

Most likely for the best. They created a serious conflict of interest when they started selling wrist watches. I would read articles and wonder, OK are they just trying to hype this or that watch just to sell it?

Hodinkee has a special nostalgic place in my heart. I couldn’t imagine them not being around but I do hope there’s better times for them down the road !

Its just the natural byproduct of the bubble continuing to burst. As an "enthusiast" I think its a great turn of events. Swatch and LVMH can start selling off their watch brands. The fake Rolex "scarcity" can dry up and they go back to being a standard mall jeweler watch. Life finally returns to normal as the hype train moves to the next tulip bubble.

So is Crown and Caliber still running? It looks like their website is still active. I bought a couple of very nice watches from them, pre-Hodinkee, around 3-4 years ago.

They forgot about their core audience. But now most of that audience has moved on.

Hodinkee branding is so strong in the watch community I think they will thrive even down the road. Their reach and content is unparalled i think.

Retail pricing may be going up, but overall the pricing is weakening across the secondary market. If you look at Chrono24 listings, a lot of desirable models are selling for FAR below retail.

Overpriced items are not luxury items. I was about to buy the 2024 speed master pro last year but then they released the swatch omega which looks similar, yes, much lower quality and the bracelet is different, but it just looks sooo similar!! That is when i changed my mind.

When it comes to fine imitation watches, amzwatch delivers. I've bought from them several times, and I've never been let down.

Good, the Speedmaster is one of the most overrated watches on the market and so overpriced.

got my 39mm with the white dial on the 3-link "Bader" bracelet watch on MaMaCoo 3 weeks ago and am loving it to pieces. Absolute fantastic watch that wears super comfortable on my 6.75 inch wrist. Chose the 3-link over the 5-link bracelet for the toolless quick adjustment. Way more comfortable than my Longines Hydroconquest 41 mm.

Omegas are not collectable, it is just that simple. All of the limited number of mass produced watches like many of the watches you feature will not appreciate. That said, they make high quality wearable watches.
